ABOUT US
GYOnlineNG — The Business Behind African Entertainment. Founded in Ibadan in 2018 as a youth entertainment platform, GYOnlineNG has grown into a publication focused on Nigerian music, Nollywood and the business, people and institutions shaping African entertainment. We still cover the culture audiences care about; we go further by examining the decisions, economics and power structures behind it.
We are interested in the part of the story that usually gets skipped. Who owns the rights? Who gets paid? How does a distribution deal work? What does a box-office number actually measure? Why does one artist break through while another with a similar song does not?
What We Cover
Our main areas are Nigerian music business, Nollywood business, artists and careers, streaming, distribution, contracts, cinema economics and the culture around them.
Our editorial lens is the intersection of culture, money, ownership and power. When the evidence allows, we ask who owns the rights, who controls distribution, how value is created, where revenue goes and what the available numbers can genuinely tell us. Not every story needs to be a business analysis, but every story should leave readers with a clearer understanding of its subject.
Some stories are reported. Some are analysis. Some are profiles. We do not pretend those are the same thing, and we do not think every story needs to be written in the language of a press release.
Where We Are Coming From
GYOnlineNG is independently run and based in Ibadan, Nigeria. The site is led by Olayinka Koya.
The independence matters because entertainment coverage often sits very close to the people being covered. Artists, labels, distributors, platforms, filmmakers and promoters all have reasons to frame a story in a particular way. Our job is to listen to those accounts, check what can be checked, and make the distinction between what is known and what we think the evidence suggests.
Our Approach
We would rather make a useful argument than fill a page with noise. That means showing the numbers behind a claim when numbers are available, naming the source of an important fact, and saying when the public record is incomplete.
We also get things wrong sometimes. When that happens, the answer is a correction, not a rewrite of history.
Tools We Use
Software can help with research, transcription, organisation and editing. Sometimes that includes AI-assisted tools. None of those tools is a source, and none of them gets the final say on what we publish.
Names, dates, figures, quotations and important claims are checked against the underlying material. The final responsibility for what appears on this site belongs to the editors and writers publishing it.
