The word ‘weekend’ seems to paint a beautiful fun-time picture. Our Thursdays are sometimes spent daydreaming and waiting on the roar of ‘Thank God It’s Friday’. Yet the weekend sometimes gets boring and quite predictable especially when you are broke. If you find yourself wondering what you could do, here are a number of fun activities you can engage in to –in the lyrics of Bob Marley – lively up yourself.
Free or Cheap Fun Ways to Spend Your Weekend
First Things First …. Exercise
Exercising helps in a lot of ways such as de-stressing, improving your health, controlling your weight and lifting your mood. You can try these
- Go for a run
- Go for a swim
- Do Yoga
- You can get a skipping rope but any good rope will do really. Laundry drying line can easily be converted into one.
- Play football. This might appeal more to the guys but football is also a game for the ladies. A quick way to find a playground is to locate the nearest public secondary school in your area. Besides the lovely game of soccer, this will help you socialise with people in your neighborhood.
Check for Events
Check through websites that lists events for the ones you might want to attend. Not all events and activities will require a fee; sort through and pick out the ones you are interested in. Some events take place every other weekend, some monthly, make sure to mark your calendar.
Visit A Library,Music/CD Store
I particularly enjoy visiting a Music store. The body of work and history stored in the stores excite me and there is so much one can learn from such visits. Check out a library for their collection of books.
In Lagos, you can visit the Zaccheus Onumba Dibiaezue Memorial Libraries at Ikoyi. Some book stores organise booking readings and other art events.

Take a Walk – Get to know your environment, chat with neighbours and discover new joints on the on the street.
Up Your Photography, Make Up Game – How about a private photoshoot? Pull out your smartphone and get snapping. You can find interesting things in your house or neighborhood to document. If you have a professional camera, this is a perfect time to play with it and hone your skills. You can practice your makeup skills and make a video of it. Who knows you might just be the next big thing on YouTube.
Go to Church – if you would like to play the drums or sing, you might want to catch up with your church choir practice on a Saturday. You can also help with getting the church ready for Sunday service.
Board and Card Games–it might be refreshing to play Ludo, Scrabble, Draught, Chess and cards, especially if like me you have not played it in years.
Write a letter to your future self.
Invite friends over.
