The 2015 general election is an interesting moment among Nigerians and also it’s a historical moment for our democracy, because the sitting government easily accept defeat for the election result by INEC .
This election is the first time in Nigeria history that sitting president will be defeated by the opposition party.
However, INEC has announced the winner of the presidential election, but there are some lessons to learn from this election process.
The slogan in town now is ” Change ” , because the opposition party has end the dominant supremacy of the PDP in the Federal arms of government . Things are certainly different in Nigeria.
One of the leading international media house BBC has come up with five reasons why the out going president Dr Goodluck Jonathan lost the election to Gen Buhari in a close contest. You may or may not agree with them but their reasons are pretty valid.
Check them out after the jump
1. Boko Haram and security
President Jonathan was widely criticised for treating the Boko Haram insurgents with kids gloves. He only really started to take a heavy stance against the terrorist group six weeks ago, when the elections were postponed.
Boko Haram is responsible for killing over 20,000 people, numerous abductions (including those of the Chibok girls) and forcing over 3 million people from their homes.
2. Economy
Most Nigerians still live well below the poverty line, even though we are the largest producer of oil in Africa. With this and the weakened naira, the economic pinch was felt by many except a few.
3. More difficult to rig
With INEC’s introduction of biometric voters cards (PVCs) It was harder to to impersonate someone else, hence harder to rig.
4. Weakened & Crumbling PDP. United & Strong APC
With key PDP statesman Olusegun Obasanjo, publicly denouncing the party and throwing his weight behind the opposition party APC, it was safe to assume that PDP was perhaps not the formidable and united force it was when it was formed in 1999.
5. People wanted Change
With PDP’s 16 years in power and the country being in such a deplorable state, the nation was ready for change.
DO YOU AGREE THAT THESE ARE THE REASONS WHY GEJ LOST THE ELECTIONS?
