The Human Rights Day is observed by the international community every year on 10 December.
Commemorating human rights on this day dates back to 1948-1950 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which was a declaration that enshrined the rights of man and signifies the ‘first global expression of rights’ that every man is entitled to. Although not completely adhered to, the declaration stands as an ideal that should be attained in any given society.
Taking the Universal Declaration from theory to practice would do a world of good, there is a constant need to encourage and boost awareness on the UN Covenants on the Rights of man in all aspects of life. Non-governmental organizations and even certain individuals make it their goal to consistently fuel seminars, talks and campaigns that focus on the subject of rights and freedoms.
On this day, many take to the streets to march for the recognition of these basic rights. In addition, seminars, public meetings, awareness conferences are scheduled to encourage the knowledge of human rights and shed light on the injustice perpetuated.
The several social media platforms prove useful to spread the word on human rights and particularly on the predicament of refugees, child workers, child brides, bond slaves amongst others.
With the #HumanRightsDay hashtag, one could easily follow up on the happenings of today. Happy Human Rights Day and don’t forget to spread some awareness before the day’s end!
