8. The British Bank of the Middle East Robbery
Stolen: $20 million – $50 million
When Lebanon was in the throes of a civil war in 1976, a bunch of robbers decided to take advantage of the chaos.
The crew used explosives to break through the wall of a Catholic chapel and into the nearby British Bank of the Middle East in one of the most daring thefts in history. They took experienced locksmiths with them to break open the vault.
Cash, stocks, gold bars, diamonds, and other valuables totaled $44.5 million taken by the robbers. There was no recovery of the treasure, and no one was arrested. The stolen products are now worth over three times what they were in 1976.
