8. Rikers Island Prision
The New York prison Rikers Island has a history of inmate violence. In 1991, a prison guard called John Reyes described himself as “daily scared” because of the beatings and deaths he observed there.
Because of the prison’s violent history, it is currently one of the world’s harshest jails.
Several jail reform initiatives have reduced the number of stabbings per year from 1,000 to 70.
