In February 2014, The President of Ugandan Yoweri Museveni, signed a bill into law imposing harsh punishment for homosexual acts in the country, but President Barrack Obama, was very vocal to the situation.
He tagged the pronouncement by President Yoweri Museveni , as a “step backwards” and later the Ugandan president reply him with statement that he is continuing with the law, but hopes it won’t affect the relationship with both continues. But it was unfortunately for the Ugandan people’s and their economy.
The United States has cut aid to Uganda, and cancelled sponsored military exercise. According to Aljazeera, a White House statement on Thursday said the move was intended to “reinforce” support for human rights for Ugandans regardless of sexual orientation
It is now being reported that western donors including the US had halted or re-directed about $118 million in aid to Uganda before the announcement on Thursday.
Could our country be next? Will the Federal Government bend the laws to continue to get aid?
Money allocated for projects in the east African country, will be reallocated to other African countries. The US would also impose visa restrictions on Ugandans it believes have been involved in the violation of human rights.
Don’t forget that President Ebele Jonathan, signed into law a bill of 14 years jail term punishment for anybody caught in any homosexual act in the country.
