When it comes to the Yoruba tribe Olamide and Reminisce are arguably heavyweights , successful and also biggest indigenous rappers right now in Nigeria music industry.
This afternoon we shall take a look at the best rapper between Reminisce and Olamide.
They’ve made landmark in Nigerian music industry which can never be underestimated. The interesting thing about them is that they started as professional rappers at the same label which is Coded Tunes Entertainment but they later went separately.
In fact, they both rap with the mixture of Yoruba and English. They’ve even featured each other in their songs, i.e Reminisce – Government ft Olamide & Endia, Reminisce – Local Rappers ft Olamide & Phyno, Olamide – Legendary hustlers ft 9ice & Reminisce, Olamide – Industreet (Cypher) ft Reminisce & Base one.
OLAMIDE
Olamide Adedeji aka Olamide was signed to Coded Tunes Entertainment as a rapper. He raps with Yoruba, English and also sing. Olamide was a part-time student of Mass Communication at Tai Solarin University at that time. He released his debut single titled Eni Duro (You won’t wait) in 2011. He also released other two singles titled ‘Apa ti jabo’, ‘Young Erikina’ and his first album titled Rapsodi in 2011. Olamide left Coded Tunes after his first album to start his own label which he called YBNL Nation (Yahoo Boy No Laptop) and he has released three albums under his label; YBNL (Yahoo Boy No Laptop) in 2012, BGEL (Baddest Guy Ever Liveth) in 2013 and Street OT (Street Orientation) in 2014.
Olamide has won many awards in his career which include Best Rap Album and Album of the year for YBNL in The Headies 2013 and BGEL in The Headies 2014, Best Street Hip-Hop Artiste in The Headies 2013, just to mention but a few. Some people believe that he is the King of new school Yoruba rap because of his versatility. Some of his hits are: Ilefo Illuminati, Young Erikina, First of All, Abeg o!, Bobo, Durosoke, Turn Up, Story for the gods, Awon goons mi, Stupid Love etc.
REMINISCE
Remilekun AbdulKalid Safaru aka Reminisce was signed to Coded Tunes Entertainment as a rapper. He is a crossover rapper. Reminisce started to rap with English emulating rappers like Nas, Jay Z and Snoop Dogg. He recorded a hard core rap album at Coded Tunes in 2006 but it was never released due to parental pressure on him to complete his education. Reminisce studied Purchasing and Supply at Kwara State Polytechnic. He came back to music in 2008 and he was featured in 9ice’s song titled Barchelor’s life. He rapped with English in that song.
He later released two singles titled ‘Ever since ft 9ice’ and ‘If only’. Reminisce left Coded Tunes and he was signed to Edge Records in 2009. He became a fully-fledged Yoruba rapper when he released ‘Ka Ko bi chicken’ in 2012. The track was included in his first album titled Book of Rap Stories which was released in that same year. He released his second album which is titled Alaga Ibile in 2013. The album sold over one million copies.
Time Magazine included Reminisce in the names of ‘7 world rappers you should meet’ in 2014. His third album was released in 2015 titled Baba Hafusa. The album made it to #12 on Billboard World Album Chart. This made it the third Nigerian album to made it to that chart after 2face’s Ascension and Asa’s Beautiful Imperfection and the first Nigerian indigenous artiste to made it to that chart. Reminisce has his own label too which he named Les Roses Rogues (LRR). Some of his hits are: Ka ko bi Chicken, 2musshh, Fantasy, Daddy, Tesojue, Eleniyan, Ever since, Government, Local Rappers etc.
