2. Harry Maguire (£80m – Leicester City to Manchester United – 2019) Flop
Maguire became the most expensive defender in history after his outstanding performances for England at the 2018 World Cup and his consistent play for Leicester persuaded United to pay £80 million to wrest him away from the King Power Stadium.
When Ashley Young left the team in 2020, he was given the captain’s hat after initially making an impression at Old Trafford.
But he seems to have suffered under the weight of that additional responsibility, as previous season, under Ralf Rangnick, United ended sixth with their lowest points total in the history of the Premier League due to a run of costly mistakes.
Maguire will continue to serve as captain, at least for the time being, according to new manager Erik ten Hag, but if he doesn’t have a solid start to the season, United may look to sign Ajax center-back, Lisandro Martinez, which would put his spot in the starting lineup in jeopardy.
