Lusail Stadium by Foster + Partners and Populous
The largest of the eight structures, the 80,000-capacity Lusail Stadium, will host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM final. The interplay of light and shadow seen in the Fanar lantern inspired the design.
The architectural form and façade are inspired by the intricate motifs of art and furniture found in the Arab and Islamic worlds during the early civilizations. Because of its prominent location in Lusail, a newly constructed metropolis, the stadium’s master planning includes a tram system and lush green spaces, transforming it into a sustainability-focused arena that focuses on human needs and environmental conservation.
After the event, it will be converted into a multi-purpose community hub, complete with schools, shops, cafés, sporting facilities, and health clinics. The stadium was dedicated at the end of 2021.
